This is a time for serious reflection and self examination. As we are propelled toward decisions that reflect who we are there are disturbing signs that the loudest voices in our society often represent a betrayal of the values upon which our country was founded.
Although we didn’t have a “perfect union” from day one, it was a goal to which we aspired. And, while Doris Kearns Goodwin in her book, Team of Rivals holds Lincoln’s wily governing style in high regard, clearly his purpose wasn’t to encourage rancor and division but rather to find a way forward. Lincoln famously decried what he said could only lead to the destructive outcome of “a house divided.” Today we seem to have lost our way in terms of finding measures that would lead to national reconciliation.
