It takes a really long time to dispel the myths and duplicitous use of language that permeate opinion in our society. Political advocates and media provocateurs count on securing our attention by taking stands that appear to make perfect sense in the quick-step coverage to which most of us have become accustomed.
Didn’t we all used to think the Chamber of Commerce promoted not just business but the well-being of entire communities? If we did we were misled or at the very least missed the point that in some people’s eyes it was the ability to make as much money as possible with the fewest restraints that defined us as a society. But as things progressed, business was constrained by demands on its profit-making engine to fund insurance and pension plans not just to attract workers but in order to comply with government regulations.
