Of course people are upset. Jobs are scarce, oil is contaminating the shores of the Gulf and the war in Afghanistan is going badly. I get it, everybody gets it. What is harder to grasp is that, despite the terrible outcome of the George Bush experiment, recent polls suggest that voters may return some of the same ne’er-do-wells to power in November.

Lower taxes and smaller government are buzzwords without meaningful application. How such simplistic notions are able to captivate even the dimmest audience is puzzling except that devious hucksters and partisans in Congress have made such a muddle of our political process. But they might as well stop pretending they know something the rest of us don’t and admit they seek power for its own sake and are willing to drive the country to a veritable standstill in the name of conservative values. Progress has nothing to do with what they’re selling; change is not on their agenda.
